Question of the day: are Social Constructs ALWAYS bad?

You hear all the time how gender roles are a social construct, with the implication that they are therefore not important. However, social constructs also give us standing in line and clever whimsical sayings like “silly boys, Trucks are for girls!”. Which leads me to a question: are social constructs unnecessary? Are they bad? Or is it simply opinion taken shape within society that is wrong?

Just wondering.

  1. provokingnaught answered: They are how we make sense of the world. The point is not that they are bad, but they are malleable and we can change them for the better.
  2. sylverrain answered: Recognizing that society is built upon constructs allows them to be deconstructed analyzed, and maybe changed, which/how are the questions…
  3. davvify answered: I think the word you’re looking for is inevitable. :p social constructs drive us even subconsciously. Society wouldn’t exist without thm
